WHAT IS ECU REMAPPING?
When manufacturers come up with a new vehicle, they must be aware of the differing potential road conditions it will be driven on for different regions, such as sub-standard fuel, temperature and altitude extremes, and regional emissions laws. Accommodations must even be made when it comes to vehicles that may not be serviced as they should.
ECU remapping reads the ECU’s processing chip and makes necessary adjustments to fuel pressure, boost pressure, ignition advance, and throttle pedal control to improve engine performance across all conditions. The process is 100% safe, as it simply gives the engine the performance level it should have had in the first place. Since every engine has a unique map, we can make fine adjustments to increase power and fuel efficiency.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
ECU remapping improves engine power and torque, as well as sharpens the throttle responds and wides the power band. You’ll notice a big difference in performance, as the vehicle will feel much livelier when on the road. Sometimes, the power is restricted simply because the manufacturer wants to market the vehicle to suit fleet buyers. But you love driving and don’t want to be restricted. The other major benefit is a reduction in your vehicle’s fuel consumption. The extra torque will need less throttle to maintain your speed. You can also drive in a higher gear at slower speeds, which is especially beneficial on gradients or in stop/start traffic.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
We modify the ‘map’, or operating parameters, of the ECU. This can usually be accessed through the on-board diagnostics port. However, in some newer vehicles, we will need to remove the ECU from the vehicle and open the casing to use special tools to read the map.
